Indigenous  Peoples Day Installation

Cornell University
Fall  21

Independant Project
Advised by : Joanna Malinowska

Location: Ithaca, NY

THEME: Anti-Monument
PROCESS:  Disruption
MATERIAL: Logs+Rope
RESULT: Provocation

On October 6, 2021, Cornell students encountered five logs blocking a pathway, sparking reactions ranging from dismissal to outrage. This anti-monument was a poetic gesture to provoke reflection. Though the path belonged to the Cornell community, I reminded them it was still theirs and accessible
a parallel to how the government flooded Cayuga Nation lands, claiming they still “belong” to the Nation despite their inaccessibility.

This minor inconvenience mirrored the incomparable loss of land and homes by Indigenous peoples. Inspired by Ralph Bowen’s story of survival and Cornell’s land-grant history, the installation encouraged reflection on land dispossession and historical injustices.
